Analysis of chosen music video lyrics

Taylor Swift- Haunted

You and I walk a fragile line
I have known it all this time
But I never thought I'd live to see it break

This could symbolise the singers relationship bewteen her and her partner. It is fragile, so could easily fall leading to the end of the relationship and she knows this. However she never thought she'd see the day where it would happen- is this the day?

It's getting dark, and it's all too quiet
And I can't trust anything now
And it's coming over you like it's all a big mistake

Darkness- could symbolise her distrust towards her partner. The shot could be located at night or in a dark/ creepy place. I believe that the last sentence relates to how her partner feels- the whole relationship was a mistake.

Oh, I'm holding my breath
Won't lose you again
Something's made your eyes go cold

Partners eyes gone 'cold'- doesn't look happy anymore/ dispassionate. However she does not want to lose him again- lost him before? Eyes cold- symbol for vampirism?

Come on, come on, don't leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Something's gone terribly wrong
You're all I wanted

She really loves him and thought the relationship would work well, she is distressed because he is all she wanted.

Come on, come on, don't leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Can't breathe whenever you're gone
Can't turn back now, I'm haunted

She is not herself without him- cannot function fully- broken apart. She's changed, 'haunted' mentally? physically? Could be portrayed as haunted character (e.g. vampire).

Stood there and watched you walk away
From everything we had
But I still mean every word I said to you

Relationship definitely over- he has walked out, but she still loves him.

He would try to take away my pain
And he just might make me smile
But the whole time I'm wishing he was you instead

Somebody else?- another man involved.. affair? Or could just be a friend who was showing her more affection than her actual boyfriend was. Wishes that he would be like him.

Oh, I'm holding my breath
Won't see you again
Something keeps me holding on to nothing
Won't see him again- because she doesn't want to? or because he doesn't? She is 'holding onto' something she cannot have, or doesn't exist anymore (the relationship).

Come on, come on, don't leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Something's gone terribly wrong
You're all I wanted

Come on, come on, don't leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Can't breathe whenever you're gone
Can't turn back now, I'm haunted

I know, I know
I just know
You're not gone
You can't be gone, no
Mentality damaged maybe.. cannot accept that he is gone.

Come on, come on, don't leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Something's gone terribly wrong
Won't finish what you started

He's just left/ given up and going back to the beginning 'it's all a big mistake' to him.

Come on, come on, don't leave me like this
I thought I had you figured out
Can't breathe whenever you're gone
Can't go back, I'm haunted

You and I walk a fragile line
I have known it all this time
Never ever thought I'd see it break
Never thought I'd see it

Repeats first verse/ concluding/ looking back at what has happened/ wraps up song.

Internet Interpretations of the song:

  • There's no way that her and her ex-boyfriend can be "done" because, in her mind, he's perfect for her...
  • This song... yes, it's about not being able to let somebody go.
  •  Being led to believe that someone loves you, then having your heart broken by them, then them saying they were 'sorry' and then getting back with you and breaking your heart again...
  • Something keeps me holding on to nothing - there is nothing between them, but she is holding onto the memory
